Richard Scarry’s “CARS and TRUCKS and THINGS THAT GO” was a gift from my grandparents. Richard’s colorful illustrations held my attention on each two-page layout. My mom helped me turnover the large pages stifled on my blue fluffy pajamas while warmly wedged between her arm and thigh. On page 11, “Where is Goldbug now? Is he riding in the locomotive? Is he riding in the old-time buggy? Can you find him? Curiosity directed my blue eyes to intently search for Goldbug. He neither was in the Molasses tank truck, nor the three-wheel beet truck. I found Goldbug riding with Mr. […]

Like a drawbridge the once flat concrete sidewalk pieces raise up from the water searching Sycamore roots. They are passing under as she is passing over. The scene cannot be left unconsidered. I am has sent me to you. The blue tarp like a river streams behind the rusty chain-link fence topped with spiraling razor wire. It’s tight fitting. No excess flapping. Switchblades are left open ready to gut bottom-feeding carps if the carpeting remnant is not used. The river pours into the burning bush. Flames of fire whip off the blaze. It’s such a strange site. Sharp fragments of […]

On the Sabbath, climb over the high, high school fence to land in the outdoor cafeteria for recess. Walking about inside the institution there is a cessation of fear. Show up because we’re supposed to be here. Reveal the hidden facts. Look closer and not farther than you can see. The terrifying truth is the Lord watches over the alien. Attention earth people during the invasion serve the people. Something to eat. Something to drink. Unfold the blanket of love. Low-cost prevention. Escalating tension in detention does not honor the ascension of the Savior. The streaking light has crossed all […]

The precious stone cuts lines into your living palms and causes a chain reaction. The inscription of instructions to complete spoken while standing on the hidden skate plaza, brief moments gone by, skaters whisk by, something to keep with you. Practicing on fast glass. For heaven’s sake. Charlie encouraged me to start a photograph log so that more people could see all over the globe. The gnar started far beyond my detached ear lobes. Not everyone was on board.  Rejected by man who stumble and tumble, but chosen by God. Looking back to the Signal Hill overlook, the sightseeing with […]

Use the crosswalk. The angled heavy metal breaker bar punctures the pea gravel covered ground. Clumps of dirt flare out. Piles accumulate near the thick leather work boots on rubber cushions. The Long Beach laborer is dressed in fine linen, clean and white. The one-piece garment guard reflects the crisp mercy light. Use the crosswalk. During the morning awe the skatepark will receive a second renovation. George, the sign maker is flanked by two post hole diggers. He hands off the clipboard of assignments. The lacquered finish on the Michael K. Green sign protects the wooden installation from the elements. The […]

The word-based Jumbotron inside the city hall of Long Beach, California provides a close-up shot of a miraculous moment. Before the electronic scroll quickly flashed by and came to a close, the neon green circles confirmed what was hand-written in the sky. When decisions are made visions do not fade. The tremendous adversity faced day to day, tears begetting cries, could not stop hopeful perseverance: God married a single mother. Eight out nine council members who represent the nine districts of Long Beach voted, “YES.” Their response was projected on the presentation screen. One council member was absent. GARCIA     […]

Inside the auditorium of city hall Ms. King and Mike Donelon stepped down the theater tiers from ground level. They are fitted together in select seats along one purple row. Squiggly lines animate the arm rest and cinema cushions. A single concrete band wraps around the perimeter into the corner of the frame. The sloping black railing is not just for hand support, but coping for knees, shoulders and elbows. Challenge the way we view things. Avocado green drapes ripen the dramatic lighting. Ms. King clutches a Fedex Office box over stuffed with the paper weight of more than a […]

Middle America is sleeping. Three strangers play a pickup game of skate long after business hours like bowling balls striking the lane surface. The time is little, but adds up to the final score. Leap into the air. Sail going on now. Faces gleam during the rotation like shoe polish. Each letter gained by improper foot posture on an out of control skateboard down the row of stores slaps covered sidewalk. Another chip makes you think. The process of elimination spells out the dream. No mattresses required. No foot traffic to impede the pathway. A cosmic truth displayed in the […]

Coal mine hands, gloved with Gold’s Gym half-fingers, clutch the red rib bones. There’s been a jamming street art long before cramming stencils, wheatpaste posters and stickers on structures, signs and other things to be seen. The skateboard for decades artwork has braved the training methods of action-sport athletes who vandalized underneath these swift wooden carts. The pursuit to constantly improve their skill set is the same as the street artist. They both risk legal punishment for disobeying the law, but they go against the tsk tsk for the task at hand. Living the ultimate ride wherever they land is […]

Off North Clay Street, treasure chests inside earthen vessels show the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. There’s no fuss about the continuing carnage. Having done all to stand against the evil wiles, smile. Put on the whole armour of Amor. Sound the alarm. Arm our brethren with the power of his might. The detached silver Sony speaker is pointed at the expert portion of extreme park. Tunes play to the thrills and the spills. The boom box sits on top of an emergency call box. Push the button for help. Wait for red light. Push and […]
