Pugilism is the art or practice of fighting with the fists. Inside a concrete tunnel are overlapping rectangles of dark grey primer paint. Multiple exposures document overlapping physical movements: offensive strikes and defensive maneuvers.
Shadowboxing is lit by an Octabox as if “The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, ‘The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior.’” Trained hands and feet bring the glory ‘due his name’.
For a moment the fighter is frightened by the unexpected celestial visitation. Who could this be? He is filled with doubts because he is unsure of his own ability. “Did I not send you?” The fighter is powerful, but sees his adversaries as stronger by comparison. The Lord assures the fighter, “But I will be with you.”
The fighter shows his own weakness by wincing before the presence of God Almighty, the force greater than his own capabilities. Do you embrace his presence? Do you fight it off as the internal struggle ensues?
The visage of Gideon is a reminder to be ready. Remember the Lord is experienced in warfare as noted in Psalm 35:1 “Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me”.
